Animals in Winter Shared Reading Unit

This Shared Reading unit includes 18 detailed lesson plans for 4 nonfiction texts and 2 fiction texts found online on Epic Books for Kids. The animals featured in these texts are those found in Canada and/or North America. The lessons are suitable for most Grade 1 and 2 students and are easily adapted to a Grade 3 level.


For each book, three detailed lesson plans guide your instruction. Most lessons focus on reading comprehension strategies. A few lessons target phonics skills and oral reading fluency.


In addition to the lesson plans, this resource includes the following:

  • an explanation of the Shared Reading instructional approach

  • visuals for the reading comprehension strategies taught in the lessons

  • a chart of facial expressions and emotion vocabulary

  • a chart explaining nonfiction text features

  • a chart explaining reading with expression

  • an explanation of an instructional strategy to access background knowledge and the accompanying chart to use with students
